Heroin smuggler sentenced to death in UAE

A man who was arrested at the Abu Dhabi International Airport with 69 capsules of heroin in his rectum was sentenced to death, UAE daily The National reported on Tuesday.

The Pakistani man who was trying to smuggle 616 grams of heroin in 69 capsules into the country was arrested earlier this year by customs officials at the airport, the report said.

Officials became suspicious after noticing his 'extreme discomfort' and decided to strip search him, the paper quoted a source at the Criminal Court as saying.

However, the man's lawyer claimed he was aware he was smuggling something illegal, but was unaware the capsules contained heroin.

Under UAE law, all death sentences must be appealed.
