The Hobbit triumphs again at box office
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey remained in the top position at the US box office this weekend.
Director Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings 3D prequel earned $36.7 million in its second week at theatres. The fantasy feature, which stars Martin Freeman and Ian McKellan, set the new record for the biggest opening in December with its $84.8 million debut last weekend. Helmer Peter’s The Hobbit, which is based on J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 children's book, now has gross profits of just under $150 million.
Tom Cruise’s action crime thriller Jack Reacher premiered in second place with $15.6 million. Based on the 2005 novel One Shot written by Lee Childs, Jack Reacher’s plot centres on an ex-military man turned drifter who uncovers a huge scandal when investigating a sniper incident.
This Is 40 took third this weekend with a $12 million showing in its debut. Superbad and Knocked Up director Judd Apatow wrote this comedy about a married man struggling through his relationship.
Barbra Streisand’s highly anticipated family comedy The Guilt Trip made a disappointing opening earning just over $5 million and securing the sixth position. Rise of the Guardians took fourth and Steven Spielberg’s historical biopic Lincoln came in fifth.
