As a single girl who’s spent longer on the dating scene than most mums have been collecting floral curtains, I’ve had my fair share of interesting experiences. And just like long term relationships, there’s pros and cons to playing the field. Even if you’re not a huge fan of the idea, dating is definitely something every girl should experience at some point. So what are the biggest highs and lows of the dating scene?
Pros
1. Meeting new people
If you’re a fairly sociable and outgoing person, meeting new people is the best part of dating. OK so you may bump into a few wackadoodles whose lives revolve around crochet patterns and Scrabble tournaments, but that’s all part of the fun. If you’re relaxed and easy going you can have a great time.
2. Potential to fall in love
Call me a sad old romantic, but one of the highlights of dating is the optimism you feel before you go out. Admittedly it may end in tears, rom coms and vast quantities of cake, but at the beginning, before anything goes disastrously wrong, there’s always a buzz of optimism.
3. It never gets boring
Whilst a long term relationship can start to feel a bit stale over time, the dating scene keeps things fresh. You’re keeping your options open and finding out more about what you want in a future partner. It’s definitely an interesting learning curve.

Cons
1. Disappointment
When out date, most short term relationships don’t work out. Whilst I’ve happily said ‘good riddance’ to most of these and sent them to my island of lost men, there’s been a few heartbreakers along the way. Sometimes you meet a guy you’d love to be mates with, but if you’ve already dated, it can be awkward to turn it into a friendship.
2. Bad dates
Whether it’s a thirty minute account of Mr Dullsville’s tax accounts or just an awkward evening of uncomfortable silence, bad dates are enough to put any girl off. My advice? If you experience a bad date drown the memory with a big cocktail and spend a night out with friends to cheer yourself up (and remember that there’s normal interesting people in the world).
3. It’s exhausting
When you’re dating you’ll want to look your best and generally be at your most sparkly and shiny. It’s pretty tiring when you constantly have to be at your best so when you’re not out and about, console yourself by putting on a cosy onesie and consuming as much chocolate as feasibly possible without getting sick.
