“If only women paid as much attention to their breasts as men do,” reads one Breast Cancer Awareness campaign. Now that we’re in the middle of Breast Cancer Awareness month, it’s important to remember to take initiative and be mindful of our own health.
Nobody knows your body as well as you, which makes you the first line of defense against breast cancer. Keep your eyes open and don’t dismiss any changes you may feel, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Things to look out for include: changes in shape, size or texture, a lump or thickened breast tissue, redness, rash, pain, swelling, and even discharge.
The number of women (and men) being diagnosed with breast cancer is increasing! Thankfully however, survival rates are improving with increased awareness and earlier detection. Be wise and be careful, you can never be too cautious about your health. So take care of yourself and your breasts.
In Lebanon alone, more than 1700 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. As there are several types of breast cancer, the causes are not scientifically identifiable, therefore precaution and positivism are the only way to deal with such a momentous threat. Mirna, a Lebanese woman diagnosed with breast cancer, told LBC reporters that even though she lost her hair and was constantly pale as a result of the treatment, she never lost her strong will and love for life and that’s what eventually got her through the ordeal. Furthermore, studies show that in Lebanon pre-menopausal women are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer when compared to the world average. So implementing early screening programs and raising awareness are especially important among younger age groups. You can never be too cautious.
